my dilemma about the floorcloth is solved.
i'm KEEPING it. wooooooooooooot!
i thought of a better present and made it friday night:
i scanned in their invitation (which was 2-sided), enlarged it slightly and printed it on fabric. then i quilted the rest of the top of the pillow and viola! a cool, unique personalized wedding present. two things about this are important:
1. i bought exactly *nothing* while making these pillows. i am very happy with that as a dyed-in-the-wool skinflint.
2. i get to keep my floorcloth and use it as the linchpin around which i redecorate my diningroom. wheeeeeeeeeeeee!!! this is my favorite part. :selfish:
seriously.
would you appreciate this floorcloth as a wedding present?
it's still drying/stretched. that's why the edges are messy and it's on plywood. when it's done it will be hemmed and sealed and waxed.
here's the story:
my b.f. has a friend who is getting married in june. she's a hippy vegan back-to-the-land wannabe kind of chick who is having a cool pagan wedding outdoors and stuff. so keep that in mind. she's DEFINITELY NOT a martha stewart/matchy-matchy kind of person. still, the wedding, despite being pagan, seems to have a lot of pomp and circumstance surrounding it? like a lot of traditional shit with bridesmaids and invitations and shit. so i kinda wonder if she is going to expect more traditional gifts? i don't know? did i mention that i FUCKING HATE WEDDINGS??
anyway:think long and hard about whether it's an appropriate.
cuz if y'all don't think it's appropriate i have NO FREAKING PROBLEM ~~keeping~~ this. i absolutely fucking L.O.V.E. this rug!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it would look sooooooooooooo aweeeeessssssssssoommmmmmmmmeeeeee in my kitchen. *sniff*
i guess i'm going to make one for myself but still. ::wants to keep floorcloth::
for those who are unfamiliar with painted floorcloths, they have a long history reaching back to colonial times. they are EXTREMELY sturdy and protects uncarpeted areas of the floor better than anything. they are particularly handy in the kitchen in front of the sink/stove so as to protect the floor underneath from water damage from spills, etc. they are also awesome because they protect without collecting dust. and they are very, very easy to maintain--just a quick wipe when they're dirty and once a year sealing with polyurethane if in a high traffic area.
i *love* painted floorcloths. i had a huge one in my old house--the first one i ever painted--and that thing was INDESTRUCTIBLE. i even used it outside for a while. in mud. (don't ask--i wasn't treating it well at all!) a quick wipe and it was good as new. i accidentally left it behind at my old house. that was the only way i got rid of it.
the drawback is that they are pricey. standard price (this place seems to have pretty standard prices) is anywhere from $18 a square foot (for a simple design) to $40 for a more complicated design.
so that means for a simple design of a 3x5 rug it would be about $300. before shipping. (mine above is about 3'x4' btw.)
