yes, that's fake fur.
and those are plastic flowers. not silk. plastic.
give up?
surprise! it's a kleenex box cozy!
my *favorite* part is how it adds "glamour and a touch of color to any room".
"glamour" is not how i would describe fake fur and plastic flowers.
oh, my other favorite part is the "cozy covers: the key to smart styling!" tagline. uhmmmm.
yeah. smart styling.
thing is? next box of kleenex-like stuff i buy? this is going on it. i'm going to use it. hell to the yes, baby.
the greatest thing about the thrift store is how sometimes, just when you're having a Very Bad Day (VBD), it can cough up from it's rheumy lungs items that are just weird enough to take your mind off that V.B.D. you're having. sometimes it will even cough up stuff you actually need and have been thinking about.
exhibit 1:
mmmmmkay.
the back *sort* of explains it:
how completely odd.
yes, i am installing this on my dash. i NEED a fake ejector button--i just didn't know it until tonight.
exhibit 2:
thrift stores are so cool.
i'm currently sewing like a crazy mofo, trying to sew reusable grocery bags to sell at a couple festivals this fall. i am donating everything i make from the sale of these to a local animal sanctuary. they need as much money as possible before october 1! eek!
so i bought a couple new pair of killer shoes this 4th of july weekend so by LAW i was required to make a new bag to go with each brown/black pair of new shoes. i really loved the design of my tulip purse so i decided to do it in leather this time. i used two leather coats found at the thrift store. they were both from the 80's--GIANT shoulderpads, distressed leather--the whole mess. the black coat was incredibly well loved and very well worn.
anyhoo, i made a brown one that i will take pictures of soon. i didn't feel like finishing the straps just now. don't know why. the black, though, really turned my crank when i got it done! i luff it! check it out!:
if you look closely at the straps you will see that they are a weird leather chain. i made the straps from a weird craft kit i found at the thrift store. it was for a leather "link belt".
i dunno--i just saw it, saw it was .99 cents and thought it might come in handy some day. turns out it did! and in a wonderful way. here's a close up of the handles:
it just dawned on me that i didn't take pictures of the other side. i painted both sides with the swallows. they remind me of thermal imaging. i don't know why i wanted thermal imaging of swallows on my bag but they turned out smashing i think! i can't wait to carry it with my new shoes!
:whew:
finally. this weekend. finally!
i decided that i wanted to redecorate my diningroom. here it is before:
well, i decided it was time for a change. i wanted to use my painted floorcloth in this room. i had some lime green rayon that i was NEVER going to use for ANY sewing project evarrrr so i used that for the walls. the result?
that painting has come a long way!
i decided to put the "floorcloth" on the walls because it would just get lost under the table. i need to do an area rug sized floorcloth for the diningroom for it to look good. someday i suppose!!
the curtains! oy, the curtains. i realized once i had the fabric on the walls that i was going to have to work extra hard to find fabric to coordinate for curtains. i didn't have *anything* in my hoard of fabric. NOTHING. well, except a tiny piece of bright fabric about 34" x 20". not NEARLY enough for a curtain. or a valence. or anything. so i looked at wal-mart today (we went for some of those energy lightbulbs for the bathroom). looking at their "home decor" fabrics it looked as though everyone in the world decorates with *beige*. **puke** nothing bright and colorful.
so i came home and found some blue and green fabric and pieced these curtains together. i had to do some creative piecing to get that band on the curtains to work but i did it! woot! i love how bright and cheery and funky they make the room!!
i didn't have time to make a tablecloth. but it's probably going to be yellow. red would be nice, too. who knows. i think i will have to wait and see what the thrift store gods are going to send me!!
so the wedding that the pillows from this post were for was last weekend. it was nice, if a little hot. i wasn't pleased to have to sit in direct sunlight the whole time. this pale white girl burns so easily. :(
anyway, it ended before i got burned so i was able to happily run to the shade.
in the weeks leading up to the wedding my outfit had been causing me much consternation. i wanted to wear something unique so i tried to make a dress from one of those patterns that come in an envelope? the ones everybody uses?
well, guess what?
I FUCKING HATE THOSE PATTERNS!!!
i got halfway through the dress and discovered that it was fucking ugly as shit and to proceed was USELESS. i am so so so glad that i didn't buy any special fabric to make the dress or else i would have been doubly pissed. gah. i cannot stand the way the markings are on those patterns. i hate cutting them out, i hate marking them and i hate how they make things fourteen times harder in their instructions. i am never ever using another pattern if i can help it. i've only made one successful thing from a pattern and that was in middle school in home ec!! gar!!!!
anyway. i decided that i was just going to make a freaking dress the sunday before the wedding. i wanted a wrap dress. i had some fabric that cost about $3 for about 4 yards at the thrift store. i figured if i fucked it up i would be out 3 bucks at the most. fft.
so i started cutting and bam--check it out:
anyhoo--i'm quite proud of my dress. i got loads of compliments on it at the wedding.
oh, and as a followup to the pillows--the couple ADORED the pillows. i mean they both almost wept when they opened the package. they freaked the hell out! they called and thanked my b.f. twice and then called me. the bride said that it was by far their favorite gift of all the ones they got. so--woot!
more playing with mineral makeup.
i found a never used painting palette at the thrift store thursday evening for .79 cents. it had little jars with lids for the paint. the jars were perfect for mineral eyeshadow so i was overjoyed. friday i went to michael's to buy a couple artist's paintbrushes to use with my mineral makeup and i saw a palette exactly like the one i found at the thrift store. it was $5. it say a lot about me when i said a "yes!" and gloated briefly over the $4 i saved by buying it from the thrift store. i'm such an inveterate bargain hunter!!!
this would be more impressive if i had a "before" picture. i did but SOMEBODY [looks at b.f.] deleted it offa tha camera. :pout:
oh well. it was originally white vinyl that was blech. i cleaned it up and did this to it:
i got the stool at the thrift store, too. (obvious) i think it was 3-4 bucks. can't remember. i just liked the shape. it's amazingly comfortable!
i got home and googled and found the website. it doesn't have prices but i saw a silent auction to which one of these purses were donated and it was valued at $175. so maybe i've scored a bargain? i don't know. i'm kind of torn about actually using it because i was planning on making my own purse/outfit(?) for the wedding we are attending next month, which is the only place i would probably carry it? i don't know. i haven't decided what to do with it. i like it though.
the thrift store i found it in, though, has a history of having really really nice purses. i found a mystique/donald j. pliner bag there and a kickass vintage purse: i carried it for a little while. it's kind of awkward to carry. but it's so pretty!
anyway. i've always thought it weird that the purse collectors drop their shit at that thrift store in particular. very weird yet very awesome.
