nyeh nyeh. wanna know why? because the my farmers are nice, grow great vegetables organically AND give us these every week:
look at this beeeyoooteeful haul. the picture has the wrong white balance but whatevah:
working clockwise from the top it's:
--lettuce
--LOVELY small beets with the greens attached. i am SUPER excited about these because the tops cook up so f-ing beautifully. the pot liquor is blood red when it's done. so good! and obviously nutritious as hell.
--zucchini number 1 of 3
--tomatoes (i also got cherry tomatoes but i ate those as i was putting out the haul on the counter because to me they are better than chocolate)
--green beans
--'nother tomato
--thick n' juicy blackberries. meee--ow.
--snap peas times two packages of them.
--GREEN tomatoes. guess what? these are going to be fried.
--next is hot peppers layin' on an zuck number 2 or 3 and
--nestled next to them is a cucumber. ::sigh::
--don't forget the onion
--and the ::SWOON:: inducing eggplant . i CANNOT wait to cook this puppy up. they dint have mushrooms to buy this week (::WEEEEEPS!!:: i wanted tom gai hed!) but the eggieplant made up for it.
--another zuck
--aaand lastly they cleaned out the beds and gave me a mix of arugula/kale/mysterious greens.
to me? this IS the epitome of what makes life worth living. fresh vegetables from the garden. really fresh. i get so excited looking over this haul thinking about what i can make and how good it's all going to be. it's so unbelievably awesome. and it's so awesome to know that these were grown 10 miles from my house organically by nice people who i chat with whenever i pick up my stuff. i go through the produce section in the store now and i just can't believe what they're selling. even the health food store with the $$ organic produce! yuck! ::points to picture:: that's the shit right there. oh yeah.
i am a food geek. only food geeks could get excited at the sight of a beautiful zucchini or green beans. ::sigh::
i took my oldest dog with me tonight to pick up at the farm and she ran around checking out everything. she was so cute and i think she had a really good time. she ate some grass so i think it was all good.
- heirloom zucchini picked 10 minutes before i got there.
- onions
- garlic
- dill
- giant bag of scallions under everything there. if you squint you can see 'em.
- lettuce--this lettuce is UNBELIEVABLY good. i mean it actually tastes fucking awesome, unlike most lettuce--even organic!!
- baby taters--theres a bag of them over there on the right out of the frame.
- a cucumber. he's on the other counter, not in this pic. he wuz bein' shy.
- in the foreground that weird lacy thing is an oyster mushroom. i bought 1/2 a pound of them. mo' pictures of him below.
- flowers!!!!!!
these are not grown at my CSA farm but rather at another local farm about 40 miles away. i got some samples about a month ago and they are so good. unparalleled freshness. these things are beautiful. and tasty. they usually go for $16 a pound but we get them for $12.
they have a VERY fishy taste to them, if you've never had them before. i made fake clam chowder with the sample mushrooms i got and it was delicious! they tasted almost a little too close to the real thing. i really fucking hate the consumption of fish/sea dwellers. (this is the one area where i become one of "those" obnoxious vegetarians...i mean, get me started on it and i go OFF about fish consumption dude. it's not pretty.) not to mention the taste of sea critters. so it took me a little bit to get used to the taste of these mushrooms!
however, i have nice plans for my lovely mushrooms. i'm going to make tom yam gai soup. which if you've never had? you are missing out on some seriously fucking AWESOME soup.
i will also be making scallion pancakes with the scallions above to go with the soup. cuz scallion pancakes fucking ROCK! i am so psyched for dinner this weekend!!
i have been aching for a cast iron dutch oven for...well, just about forever. i finally decided to go to my friendly neighborhood locally owned hardware store and buy one. unseasoned and in full glory it was about $40. 35? i can't remember. i just decided to march in there and get it.
but they didn't have any.
but they could order it.
so i ordered it. and got it in. and let me tell you: it is The Single Best Cooking Pot EVAR. ever.
it's kind of heavy and the lid gets hot and it's heavy on its' own. but i love this thing. so much!
i made gumbo in it tonight and the roux came out ~~PERFECTLY~~. i have photographic evidence:
stir constantly.....
let bubble and brown. the roux browned perfectly. i could clearly see the heat was distributed evenly across the surface of the pan when i stopped stirring. there were exactly the same sized bubbles spread across the through the whole roux mixture. it was truly a beautiful thing to behold but i might be veering into geek territory.
add a couple other things and viola! gumbo. nummyness. the kale from the CSA melted into a beautifully silky texture in the gumbo. truly, truly delicious. i'm making plans for the chard next. ::drools::
our first pickup of our CSA share was today. it is such a beautiful drive out to the farm! it's breathtaking. no, really. it is!
let's see. we got 1 gallon bag of each (all organic):
--kale
--collard greens (probably 2 bags full actually)
--salad greens
--arugula
--lemon balm
--chives
--chard
--onions
we may have gotten something else. can't remember. the pictures don't show it all. i pay about $13.75 a week for our 1/2 share.
the people seem nice. it's cool to meet the person growing your food and actually look at the piece of land it grows on.
when we came home i immediately made gumbo with the kale. to. die. for!
