seedlings, week three: disaster.
cats. that's who.
yeah. smash smash. with their cute little pink paw pads.
the seedlings were fine and unmolested until yesterday when one of the cats suddenly decided to put on their godzilla costume and GO TO TOWN.
"kittyzilla SMUSH!"
the seedlings were in a window the cats don't even like. it's one of our good south facing windows so i thought i lucked out. NOT!
::sigh:: the perils of gardening with animals.
they KILLED six or seven seedling starts totally and destroyed several other pots that just hadn't had anything yet. i did some repair work and transferred some of the ones ready to fall apart into containers sooner than i had wanted. oh well. at least there's time to start more seeds!
another peril. compost:
trilly, my second dog....::pause for cute ass photos::
is cute as the dickens. she is also an inveterate trash dog, counter surfer and food stealer. she is world class at all three things. give a normal dog a tightly closed 32 ounce jar of peanut butter and they sit stumped, unable to comprehend how to get to the brown gold inside. trilly? pshaw. 5 minutes and she has chewed off the lid and is quarter of the way through the peanut butter. she'll eat about 3/4 of it if she's given time. we can put the jar of peanut butter waaaay back on the counter and she will STILL get it. the cardinal sin in our house? leaving the baby gate blocking her from the kitchen open when we are gone. because anything edible in the garbage, on the counter--anywhere--can be guaranteed to be in trilly's tummy by the time we get home. oh, the stories i could tell. so, so many stories.
so, we started a compost container a couple weeks back. it's been working splendidly. it's been outside within reach of the patio so we could take scraps out daily and put them in the container. it's been getting pretty full but it's been great to see the worms attracted to it and smell it's sweet decay.
even though it's been out there for weeks trilly decided last night that she couldn't take it anymore. she needed compost. as you can see from the pics above she chewed the lid open and went to town. which was really kind of stupid because there wasn't anything she'd like. didn't stop her from trying though!
what awes me about it, though, is that those kitty litter bucket lids? those damn things are hard to get off the bucket WITH opposable thumbs!!!! they aren't the hinge-ey kind. they can be a bitch to open! she was only out there for a little while! that dog is a freaking genius!
did i mention that she has taught abby some of her talents?
oh well. i guess we'll have to find a new more inconvenient spot for the compost bucket.
